Sahir Ludhianvi: The poet

The President of India unveils Postal Stamp commemorating Sahir Ludhianvi.

Which marriage function in India doesn’t conclude with the song ‘Baabul ki Duayen leti ja..’? Which youngster could resist moving his feets on the tune of ‘Yeh desh hai veer Jawano ka..’? Who doesn’t recall his childhood when he hears ‘Bacche mann ke sachche..’? What do we find common with these evergreen songs is one eminent face of Indian Cinema:

Sahir Ludhianvi

I won’t go into the details of his life but would rather talk of his exemplary creations which were far ahead of his time.

Who can ever forget Amitabh singing ‘Kabhie Kabhi mere dil mein ye khayal ata hai..’! It’s was Sahir sahab’s pen which went down on the piece of paper to create this beautiful magic..

Don’t mistake Sahir to be just a romantic poet who wrote only about love, romance and betrayal. To look into the other side of Sahir’s genius mind read this :

Khoon apna ho ya paraya ho

nasle-adam ka khoon hai akhir

Jung mashrik (purv) main ho ki magreeb (paschim) main

amne-aalam (vishv shanti) ka khoon hai akhir

Isliye, Ae sharif insaano!

Jung talti rahe to behtar hai

aap aur hum sabhi ke aangan main

shama jalti rahe to behtar hai.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. If you dive into this ocean of Sahir’s brilliant poetry, you would just want to go deeper into it. Sahir Ludhianvi’s thinking  was way ahead of his time. Some of his poetic songs still find relevance.
Aurat ne janm diya mard ko
mardo ne use bazaar diya…
This verse speaks well about the continuing harassment of women in the society. This song perfectly depicts the attitude of a youngster towards life..
main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya
har fiqr ko dhuen mein udaata chala gaya..
It is hard to conclude this piece of article but would take your leave with these lines of Sahi sahab..
kal aur ayenge naghmo ki khilti kaliyan chunne wale
mujhse behtar kehne wale tumse behtar sunne wale..
kal koi mujhko yaad kare kyun koi mujhko yaad kare..
masruf zamana mere liye kyun waqt apna barbaad kare..
main pal do pal ka shayar hun…
Perhaps Sahir sahab had got an idea of what would happen in Indian Cinema’s song writing segment. With the advent of ‘Hinglish’ and obscenity getting priority over acting, the standards of writing songs have gone to the lowest. It is in fact the time to revive the era of Sahir.
Post Script: I am an ardent fan of Sahir Ludhianvi.
Here’s a beautiful documentary on his life and works by Rajya Sabha TV
